Doubling Down on Safety: Workshops and Training Cement Fugee School as a Safe Space

At Fugee School, our mission goes beyond academic education; it’s about nurturing an environment where every child feels secure, respected, and understood. We firmly believe that a child’s right to a safe space is non-negotiable. This commitment was recently strengthened through two parallel, vital initiatives conducted by our dedicated partners, Humankind.

Empowering Students with Safe Touch and Consent

For our students, safety starts with awareness. We recently held a crucial Safe Touch Workshop to equip them with foundational knowledge about their own bodies and boundaries. The workshop focused on clear, age-appropriate lessons covering:

• The difference between safe and unsafe touches.
• The profound importance of consent and the right to say 'no'.
• Bodily autonomy, teaching children that their body belongs to them.
• The importance of speaking up

These are empowering lessons that are crucial for self-protection and building healthy relationships throughout their lives.

Capacitating Our Team with Trauma-Informed Care

Simultaneously, our teaching staff concluded an intensive, three-session training on Behaviour Management. This initiative was not merely about classroom discipline; it was a deeply focused effort to further capacitate our team in ensuring our service is fully trauma-informed.

Our goal is to equip teachers to understand and respond to the emotional and behavioural needs of students who may have experienced significant life challenges. The training specifically covered techniques for:

• Regulating students' emotions in a healthy way.
• Responding with empathy and understanding, rather than reaction.
• Encouraging good behaviour and discouraging undesirable behaviour
• Creating a classroom environment that promotes emotional security.

Our Holistic Commitment to Safety

These workshops and training sessions are just two components of a larger, ongoing effort to secure Fugee School as a protected environment. Our commitment includes:

• Ongoing Support: Both students and staff have regular access to professional counsellors provided through our partnership with Humankind.

• Adhering to Global Standards: We are continually working to incorporate and maintain the highest safety standards as recommended by international bodies like UNICEF and UNHCR, including strict adherence to Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policies.
